Aegadian Islands: Levanzo – Marettimo
The Aegadian Islands (Isole Egadi) are a small heavenly archipelago located around 7 km/4 mi from the west coast of Sicily. They are perfect for snorkelling
The exclusive Aegadian Archipelago is formed by three main islands and two islets, with a series of suggestive cliffs and majestic sea stacks. Our tour starts from the island of Levanzo, the smallest out of the three, with a surface above sea level of only 5,6 km². It’s like time stood still in Levanzo, since there are no paved roads (it has a population of 208 people), and the air has a scent of rosemary. The coast is formed by white calcareous rocks and by mysterious sea caves to explore snorkelling.
We leave Levanzo and its beauty frozen in time, as we continue with the next stop of our cruise, the island of Favignana. Unlike the previous one, this is the largest island in the Aegadian Archipelago. Its name is derived from the Latin word “favonius” that identified the hot wind coming from the west. Favignana is a gem of the Mediterranean Sea, its landscape is characterized by several beaches and coves which have nothing to envy to the Caribbean. Cala Rossa beach has been nominated by Skyscanner as “the most beautiful beach in Italy”.
Our yacht tour continues while we sail in a cobalt blue sea and to our last stop. The island of Marettimo is the most western island of the archipelago and it was considered holy ground by the ancient civilization of the Phoenicians. According to a mapping of locations described in the Odyssey, Marettimo would coincide with Ithaca, the home of Ulysses. The island is full of luxuriant flora comprised of wild herbs, flowers, and thyme. It has a rocky and arduous coast washed by a deep night blue sea. It’s even possible to take a tour of the many caves of Marettimo (like the Cave of the Camel, the Cave of the Pipe, the Cave of the Thunder, etc).
