Aeolian Islands Palermo – Stromboli

The Aeolian Islands are a very famous volcanic archipelago formed by 7 islands visible to the naked eye from the Sicilian coast.

The luxury yacht tour begins in Palermo, called by the Phoenicians “Zyz” which means “flower” and “splendid”. It’s a mysterious and baroque city, lively and cheerful, rich with all that contradictions which generate beauty and poetry.

Our adventure discovering the Aeolian Islands continues through Cefalù. This unmissable seaside village, founded at the foot of a rocky promontory which faces the coast, attracts thousands of tourists from all parts of the world each year, thanks to its turquoise beaches and its monuments. The Cathedral of Cefalù is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, and inside we can find the famous ancient mosaic depicting the Christ Pantocrator.

Crossing the Tyrrhenian sea towards north, our yacht reaches the first island of the Aeolian archipelago: Filicudi. On this island’s promontories, we can admire specimens of Mediterranean dwarf palms (hence the name of the island, which means “island of palms”) scattered throughout the slopes of several little extinct volcanoes (for a total of 7). Together with Alicudi, Filicudi is the smallest island in the archipelago, with only 200 residents.

Continuing our cruise, Salina is our next encounter. Formed by 6 ancient extinct volcanoes, 2 of which are the tallest of the whole Aeolian Islands (962 m / 3156 ft and 860 m / 2821 ft). These two summits, one beside each other, make Salina stand out even to the naked eye compared to the other islands. The land here is the most fertile of the archipelago, which it’s rich with caper bushes (exported worldwide) and vineyards.

On our luxury yacht, we continue south as we reach the wonders of Lipari. This is the largest island in the archipelago. The suggestive marina, surrounded by lively boats and typical fishermen’s houses, is surmounted by a volcanic promontory overlooking the sea. It’s possible to admire the ruins of an ancient medieval castle on the top of the promontory.

In the most southern part of the Aeolian Islands, we can find the fascinating Vulcano. It’s an island holy to the god of fire Vulcan (hence the name). Vulcano is famous for the therapeutic properties of its volcanic mud and its hot springs (we can see the bubbles released by the hot lava stones underwater). The island is all to be discovered, with its typical black sand beaches and a vast lava field called “the Valley of the Monsters” thanks to its natural rocks shaped like animals and legendary creatures.

The final stop of our exclusive cruise around the Aeolian Islands is in Stromboli, the most northern island in the archipelago. Its surface area is only 12 km2. Lots of famous films and documentaries were filmed in Stromboli thanks to its wild and pristine beauty. Its volcano of the same name is still active, therefore it’s possible to admire the suggestive lava flows along its slopes, called “Sciara del Fuoco” (Stream of Fire). Our tour will allow you to have dinner on the yacht just under the “Sciara” and you will be left enchanted by the beauty of the lava that shines in the night.
